The A1/A3 drone exam: how to prepare

A1/A3 is the foundation for many pilots flying drones in the open category. This guide explains the official exam and gives you a practical way to study the theory.

What you need to know

You take the official A1/A3 exam on flydrone.no after the online course. It has 40 multiple-choice questions, and you need at least 75 per cent correct: 30 out of 40.

Where do you take the A1/A3 exam?

Go to flydrone.no and follow the training provided by Luftfartstilsynet, the Civil Aviation Authority of Norway. Complete the course and knowledge checks before opening the exam. The official online course and exam are available in English. You do not need to attend a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office for A1/A3.

Kurskompis provides additional theory practice with explanations and revision. Your results with us do not replace the official exam or the proof of completion of online training issued through Luftfartstilsynet’s scheme.

What should you know before the exam?

The exam covers the decisions you make before and during a flight. Do more than memorise figures and terms in isolation: practise recognising when a rule becomes relevant.

  • Planning: airspace, people in the area, weather and equipment checks.
  • Flying: visual line of sight, separation distances, height and responding to changes.
  • Responsibility: roles, privacy, insurance and safe handling of the drone.

A study plan that reveals gaps in your knowledge

Start with a short set of questions without help. Note the topics you are unsure about, including those where you guessed correctly. Then read the explanation and create your own example of the same problem.

Try a new mixed set the next day. Before moving on, explain why each incorrect option is wrong. Finish with a full practice exam without checking the answers as you go. Good results across several different sets give a better picture of your understanding than repeatedly taking the same set.

  • Session 1: identify weak areas and read the relevant theory.
  • Session 2: revise using new situations and explain your answers aloud.
  • Session 3: complete a practice exam and work through your mistakes afterwards.

A common mistake: overlooking the conditions

Imagine a question about where a pilot may fly. The answer depends on more than the drone’s weight: class marking, people in the area and the chosen subcategory can all change the assessment. Read the whole situation before choosing.

Identify the details that actually determine the answer. If two options seem correct, ask which one meets all the conditions and which one only solves part of the problem.

Common questions

Is the official A1/A3 exam free?

Yes. Luftfartstilsynet states that the A1/A3 exam on flydrone.no is free. Operator registration and an optional course from Kurskompis are separate matters.

Do I receive a drone certificate by passing a test with Kurskompis?

No. Our tests are for practice. You must complete the official process on flydrone.no to obtain your A1/A3 proof of completion of online training.

How long is the certificate valid?

The A1/A3 proof of completion of online training is valid for five years. Follow Luftfartstilsynet’s renewal process as it approaches expiry.
